Conducts research in the field of educational innovation, design methodologies, and processes. Currently researching creativity and idea management using tools that enhance understanding of project and creative thinking.
Resources and Research Techniques
In this workshop, we will explore tools that facilitate idea management. The goal is to present tools that aid in visualizing and managing ideas to facilitate thinking and understanding the multiple pieces of information surrounding the research object. These tools can help researchers comprehend visual, conceptual, or theoretical references and data they handle. Such tools assist in defining, evaluating, generating alternatives, and refining proposals, as well as consolidating results. Both the design and academic research processes go through moments of expansion and synthesis, referred to as divergent and convergent. These processes can be better visualized and managed with tools that help with thinking and visualizing information at different stages of the process. Visualizing the research or design process is essential for more accessible communication with others and for knowledge dissemination.
BID Meeting - Teaching and Research in Design
Communicating and disseminating the research process at conferences, biennials, and platforms fosters dialogue among peers. For researchers and students, it is productive to be in places where they can communicate and disseminate their research. These are places to see and be seen, to exchange knowledge and gain insights, enabling a broad overview of contemporary academic production. We will study the case of the BID Meeting on Teaching and Design, an event held every two years in Madrid since 2008. This event serves as a platform for communication and dissemination of the production of Ibero-American design universities, fostering dialogue and knowledge exchange in all stages of undergraduate and postgraduate education. In this event, we can also observe projects involving university-industry collaboration and public institutions that have had a positive impact on society.

Design and New Digital Technologies
AI generative tools herald fundamental changes in the dynamics of creative work. Although controlling the outcome remains a challenge, rapid conceptual development and visualization can be particularly useful in the exploratory phase, facilitating certain approaches such as design fiction. This contribution aims to provide an overview of how AI can fit into various stages of the Design Thinking process, demonstrating, in particular, how AI-enabled visualization from texts and sketches allows for quick imagining and iterating on future scenarios. Starting from benchmarking over sixty AI tools according to the Design Thinking process, the effectiveness of human-AI collaboration was tested through workshops with over a hundred students. These activities demonstrated the effectiveness of following a well-defined Human Intelligence dialogue protocol "framing" Artificial Intelligence, which serves as a tool for building AI competencies as well as a creative icebreaker, leading to vivid representations of detailed speculative scenarios as a basis for a forward-looking design process.

Circular Economy Project in a Maritime Context
This research examines the possibility of applying circular design strategies to marine plastics to improve the coastal and oceanic health of the ports in the jurisdiction of Cascais, thereby generating a small but positive impact on the planet. This study revolves around the Blue Circular Postbranding Project, born in Ericeira and Cascais within the scope of the Cascais Harbor Captaincy. The project encourages local fishermen to recover and deposit marine plastics and fishing artifacts captured in their nets in the organization's marine recycling bins, rather than returning them to the sea. Afterward, we will investigate a way to reintroduce these materials into the economy using a circular strategy. The overarching goal was to determine if a circular way of reusing, particularly the recovered and discarded fishing nets, mainly composed of polyamide 6 (PA 6) on a national level, was possible and to design a model/template that represents the circular operation developed to facilitate its implementation in similar contexts. In relation to the main goal, we not only concluded that it was indeed possible but also conceived and implemented a diagram for applying circular design strategies to the treatment of marine plastics, which we hope will inspire others to think of long-term solutions.
Dr. David Camocho
Country: Portugal Affiliation: National Laboratory for Energy and GeologyDesigner for Sustainability and Circular Economy, Ph.D. in Design from IADE - Universidade Europeia, master's degree in industrial production design from IADE, and a bachelor's degree in industrial design from the same institution. He works at LNEG, the National Laboratory for Energy and Geology, collaborating on national and international projects in the fields of design, ecodesign, sustainability, and circular economy. He is also a visiting adjunct professor at ESAD.CR, teaching courses in Ecodesign and Sustainable Development and Design for Circular Economy and Sustainability. Focused on the role of design in the transition to a circular economy and sustainability, he has focused on developing methodologies and tools to integrate sustainability and circularity into the business development process, increasing added value and promoting innovation in products, processes, and systems.
Circular Design and Sustainability
Circular economy is seen as an innovative path with high potential for achieving a more sustainable society. In this context, many research projects and initiatives are being developed, but we still have a long way to go in translating theory into practice. This transition to a circular economy proposes a systemic approach focused on optimizing the life cycle of products and eliminating the concept of waste. Materials are used and reused in cyclical flows, preserving and conveying their value. In this sense, design, acting at the interface between production and consumption and in response to the needs and challenges of society, plays a crucial role in integrating sustainability and circularity criteria in problem-solving in an innovative and user-oriented manner. In implementing the circular economy, these professionals must apply strategies that support the systematization of the design process by adopting a holistic view to identify opportunities. In conclusion, it is essential to provide designers with tools and practical knowledge for developing new innovative solutions that enable a transition to a circular and sustainable economy and promote good practices in design, production, and consumption, considering the entire life cycle of products and services placed on the market.

Her primary research interests include Design, Creativity, Creative Thinking, Textile Design, Culture, Innovation, Sustainable and Cultural-Based Textile Design.
Textile Design & Culture
As textile manufacturing processes are shaped by technology, jacquard weaving technology, which allows for the creation of complex patterns, has made it possible to move each warp thread, and the computer-aided design process integrated into this system has taken the forefront. The goal of this study is to examine the jacquard weaving process in the textile sector and use designs that reflect the lives of Ottoman sultans in jacquard patterning for fabrics developed using the jacquard weaving method. Digitization and testing models were used in the study. The study universe consists of companies that produce jacquard fabrics in Ankara, Bursa, and Usak and the life stories of five Ottoman sultans (Mehmed II, the Conqueror, Sultan Selim the Stern, Suleiman the Magnificent, Sultan Murad IV, and Sultan Ahmed III), who left their signatures on some events of their period and had significant responsibilities in the Ottoman era regarding the design theme. The study samples consist of four companies that produce patterns through the Nedgraphics program and one Simetri program in Ankara, Bursa, and Usak, and the stories that impress the designer with different stories they experienced in five sultan periods in terms of the design theme. Survey forms, including business properties, jacquard weaving pattern design process, technical details, patterns, and colors of jacquard fabrics manufactured, were applied to 13 designers in five jacquard weaving companies and analyzed statistically.

Crafts Design
In a world where inequality and complex challenges affect people's quality of life, our proposal is to organize a participatory workshop where participants will be invited to explore challenges and speculate on social innovation opportunities led by design in the field of crafts. Given the significant role that designers can play in driving co-creation and collaborative processes to find solutions to complex problems (Muratowski et al., 2022; Margolin, 2014; Manzini, 2015; Savva et al., 2020), we propose that participants act as change agents (Bernarda et al., 2016), addressing specific situations affected by problems and identifying potential skills, resources, tools, and actors that will help them speculate on design-based solutions grounded in craft heritage.
Hernâni Alves (Ph.D. student)
Country: Portugal Affiliation: UBI & UNIDCOM/IADEDesigner since 2006. I worked in communication and environmental design in the cultural sector early in my career. In the last decade, I focused on digital product design in various industries. Futures, critical speculation, and participatory design are my research areas of interest as a means to address global crises of imagination and innovation.
Speculative Design
This research embarks on a radical journey, exploring visions of potential futures and their relevance to the needs of communities in the interior of Portugal. Over the past few decades, villages in the interior of the country have witnessed significant exodus as individuals sought better life prospects. This migration has left resilient communities among those who couldn't or chose not to leave, often facing isolation and abandonment. This transformation continues to have profound implications for the social and economic structure of these unique regions, contrasting with the challenges of urban living. Therefore, these regions present an opportunity for regeneration at various levels and the preservation of ancestral wisdom, offering an alternative way of life. Our research adopts an interactive approach, with participatory workshops and discussions. The inhabitants of these small villages embark on a journey of self-discovery, identifying their core values, openly sharing their hopes and fears for the future, and collaboratively building various possible scenarios for the regions. Through this process, we aim to construct a shared vision of possible futures alternative to the likely status quo, respecting the cultural and natural heritage as well as the aspirations of these populations.

Art, Design & Color
This Ph.D. research presentation explores the connection between the spirit of a place, based on color, and the sense of belonging of community members. This ethnographic research aims to clarify how local colors contribute to the identity of residents' place. It intends to involve residents as co-creators of their environment, sharing stories about this environment with outsiders, thus contributing to the sustainability of their neighborhood. Sensory experience is at the heart of the research to capture the sense of place of participants. The methods employed include walking interviews, drift, photo elicitation, expert interviews, filmmaking, and co-creation. The co-creative and sensory nature of the study will result in a collaborative tile panel created by residents and facilitated by the researcher. This panel will portray seven facades of the future, each telling its story about the neighborhood and its inhabitants ten years from now. The results are expected to inform design processes aimed at changing urban human environments, where terms like heritage and authenticity are crucial for these processes.
Tatiana Meneses (Master student)
Country: Portugal Affiliation: UBIGraduated in Communication Sciences from the University of Beira Interior and currently completing her Master's in Multimedia Design. She works at Torre Sociedade Confecções in the Marketing department, responsible for all digital communication, including website management, development (B2C), and the platform for product sales to clients (B2B). Her interest in design led to a master's project investigating how design can be a crucial and effective tool for raising awareness of environmental issues among the population.
Multimedia Design & Sustainability
The proposal for the inclusion of a new interactive and immersive experience in the Museum of Water has two objectives. The first is to increase public awareness of issues related to water resources. We live in a society where environmental problems are increasingly evident, and our actions and behaviors are exacerbating the situation. Many of our unconscious behaviors are contributing to the depletion of the essential resource for life and society: water. This project offers an innovative and creative way to engage the population personally in this environmental issue. The second objective is to analyze how design can be used as an essential tool for effective awareness and behavior change. Technologies like VR and AR enable users to have a personal experience with the environment. Can design be the key tool for influencing society's behaviors effectively?

Graphic Design and Music Education
The Western diagrammatic system of musical notation, representing notes and melodies through graphic shapes on a five-line structure - the staff, is considered a universal language respected by formal music education and musicians worldwide. However, accessibility to formal music education for children under the age of seven, before they can read, presents challenges. By recognizing children's developmental stages and applying design principles, this research aims to develop an alternative iconographic system to support early musical literacy.
Inês Garcia (PhD student)
Country: Portugal Affiliation: UBI & UMinhoPh.D. student in Fashion Design, with a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design. My main research interests are related to Fashion Design and Emotional Experience with fashion products, Sustainable Fashion, and Conscious Textile Production.
Graphic Design and Musical Education
Among the various areas of design, fashion has a unique ability to evoke emotions simply through wearing a piece of clothing. Clothing can bring emotions to life through the user's experience with the product. Although intimate fashion has evolved considerably in recent decades, children's intimate fashion has followed a different path, and more research is needed in this area. This research proposal highlights the need for a new line of research in the field of children's intimate fashion. It also emphasizes the importance of a study on the clothing experience in childhood, specifically how fashion design can incorporate emotional value from the children's perspective. To address the issue, a qualitative-quantitative research methodology is proposed through a case study to analyze the problem of childhood incontinence, especially fecal incontinence, and understand the levels of interference that the condition has in the user's perception of the emotional value of intimate clothing. This analysis will allow the development of an innovative intimate fashion product that promotes better intimate hygiene in childhood.

Country: Portugal Affiliation: UBIMaster's degree in industrial design from the University of Beira Interior and a bachelor's degree in the same field. My research focuses on parametric design and its convergence with other areas of knowledge, including biomimetics.
Graphic Design and Musical Education
The research focuses on parametric design methodologies used to create logical mechanisms that allow for deriving geometric and compositional variations from algorithmic tools. It explores new possibilities for aesthetic and application expressions (workflow and interface) resulting from intense technological integration and convergence with other areas of knowledge, with a particular emphasis on biomimetics. This research analyzes the implications of this methodology in design and the production system in Design. It also classifies different project work approaches that characterize parametric design.
João Bravo (PhD student)
Country: Portugal Affiliation: UBI/LABCOMDegree in Communication Sciences (UBI), a Master's in Multimedia Design (UBI), and I am currently a Ph.D. student in Media Arts (UBI). I am also a guest assistant professor at the University of Beira Interior, where I teach semiotics, design history, multimedia communication, critical design theory, and more. My academic interests are related to the use of design as a reflective catalyst, and I believe, as Charlie Brooker does, that there is no need for new seasons of Black Mirror because the once brave new world has ceased to be too uncanny and has become (almost) a soap opera.
Graphic Design and Musical Education
The aim is to explore how design can contribute to questioning technological innovations and their effects on specific communities. Hoping that this exploration can be considered a reflective material, the research also seeks to find out if the principles advocated by creative design can contribute to the emergence of debates on technologies and future implications.

I am a Fashion Designer, teacher, and researcher, and I am passionate about context-specific research as a way to diagnose fashion challenges and provide locally relevant fashion solutions to my society. For my professional development and considering the relevant issues in the fashion and textile industry, I am very active in various professional organizations, including the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) in Knoxville, USA, among others.
Co-Design as a Sustainable Design Thinking Approach to Address the Widespread Redundancy of "White Wedding Dresses" in Ghana
The wedding dress is perhaps one of the most common clothing items in Ghana, which is often prematurely discarded or becomes redundant when wedding ceremonies end, making it a single-use garment, regardless of the time, money, and other resources invested in its acquisition. This consumption behavior is attributed to the lack of innovative design thinking approaches and the inability to incorporate user needs and values through co-design. This study is an extract from the generative phase of my Ph.D. thesis, which extensively focuses on addressing the redundancy of wedding dresses to extend their lifespan within Ghana's wedding culture. It explores co-design thinking techniques involving the female target audience. The study employs needs theory and facilitation theory as design tools to translate and stimulate the co-design process. The study is qualitative and uses a studio-based methodological approach to address the study's goal, as described in the main thesis.

Decolonization of Trend Research
The significant growth of the trend research market has brought both positive expansion and critical views on this sector. While the sector used to focus predominantly on aesthetic issues (e.g., the color of the season), today trend researchers engage with the social sciences. Additionally, through peripheral authors, the decolonization agenda questions the studies, methods, and bibliographies used by trend researchers, which predominantly feature European and North American authors and companies. This work seeks to initiate a reflection on the need for profound changes in the thinking and practice of trend research, given the prominence of this activity in a consumption-oriented society undergoing significant transformations. It looks at the possibilities of predicting a more diverse, inclusive, and plural future.
